On Friday 27th November 2009 the In Your
Dreams exhibition opened at the Maitland Regional Art Gallery in New
South Wales. Maitland is in the Hunter Valley, heart of the wine making
industry. The gallery has recently undergone extensive renovations over a period
of five years, and In Your Dreams was the first exhibition to be accepted by the
gallery to be shown in the new extended venue. Our show was housed in the
original section of the gallery. There are six other exhibition spaces there,
all with excellent exhibitions on at present.

In Your Dreams opened in Bundaberg,
Queensland on Wednesday April 29, and it will then move further north to the Cairns
Regional Gallery where it will open on Friday June 26.
Bundaberg
Regional Art Gallery took 3 days to install the exhibition, using 50 hours
contributed by staff, and 63.5 hours of volunteer’s time. The exhibition was
open to the public for 33 days. There were 102 visitors at the opening night,
and total numbers for the exhibition were 1751 visitors, of that 409 were
children. Two children’s activities were set up within the gallery to
coincide with the In Your Dreams exhibition. The Public Program Officer
organised 4 visits to the exhibition. There were five exposures in the media.
The exhibition was promoted in two newspapers, and on two radio stations and one
television station. The gallery received funding from four sponsors for the
exhibition. The Gallery was very pleased to be able to be part of this tour. |

On Wednesday 29th April 2009 the
In Your Dreams
exhibition was opened in Bundaberg, Queensland, in the newly
renovated main gallery of the Bundaberg Arts Centre. Andrew Gill warmly
welcomed a good crowd of locals to the opening. Helen Sanderson gave a half
hour talk on the exhibition prior to the opening, and also spoke at the opening
ceremony. There was a lovely party atmosphere afterwards with a local band
playing good music in the gallery area. People were very interested in the
exhibition, in particular the international component of it.Many questions were
asked about the artists' works. Bianca Acimov has set up a podcast for people to
listen to as they walk around the exhibition, a delightful innovation for the
duration of the show.
The photos below show the art works in situ in the gallery, and some photos from
the opening. There are also general photographs of Bundaberg and the surrounding
area to show a little of the area where the exhibition is currently being shown.
The Bundaberg Arts Centre is the building with a lot of purple on it. Bundaberg
is a large rural centre situated near the coast, with a big sugar industry. It
is the home town of Bert Hinkler, an Australian aviator, who made the first solo
flight from Britain to Australia in 1928. There is an aviation museum in
Bundaberg. Bundaberg Rum has been made here for over a hundred years. Also
included are a few photos of Woodgate Beach just south of Bundaberg, a small
town on the coast, which has a lot of wildlife living right in the town.

In Your Dreams opened at the beautiful
Caloundra Regional Art Gallery on Friday March 6 2009. Caloundra is a fast
growing city on the Sunshine Coast of Brisbane, just an hour north of the
Queensland capital city Brisbane. In attendance were artists Rosemary
Penfold, Corrie Wright (from Maleny) and Helen Sanderson. This gallery has a tradition
of asking for one volunteer to select the volunteers choice from each
exhibition, and she selected Corrie's work, plus she also made special mention
of the work by Penny Carey Wells. It was wonderful to see the
excellent new work by Barb Flemington that arrived at the gallery in time to be
hung with the rest of the exhibition. John Waldron, the gallery director,
welcomed the exhibition in his opening address and commended the courage taken
to undertake a project of this size and complexity.

It is wonderful to see that the Caloundra gallery chose to highlight the
work of their local artist and IYD exhibitor Corrie Wright by inviting her to
exhibit some of her interactive works in the additional foyer and gallery spaces
at the In Your Dreams exhibition.

Jan 2009 |
Sadly in October 2008 the art work of Canadian artist
Barb
Flemington was stolen while on exhibition. We are grateful to the Albury
City Regional Art Gallery for assisting Barb to get new work made so that she
could continue to have her work as part of the touring exhibition in Australia.
This work has now been completed, and is on its way to Australia for the opening
at Caloundra Regional Art Gallery on March 6. The thieves had left behind the
wooden box she used as part of her work. The box was sent back to Canada, and
Barb has created a new work that is closely related to the first. It is called
Meditations of Love - Verse II. Many thanks to Barb for her generous spirit in
getting over this unfortunate incident and moving on to produce this wonderful
work. |
